Dr. Edmond D. Monaghan C.D., B.A., M.D., M.SC., FRCSC, FACS.

On Friday April 24th 2020, Dr. Edmond Monaghan died peacefully with courage, strength and dignity in his 91st year. Beloved husband of 60 years to his wife Lise. Cherished dear father of Marie (Pierre Cimon), John (Kristina De Broin), Edmond (Lizabeth Mulder) and Pierre (Heather Brennan). Devoted and engaging Grandfather of thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Frank O'connor.

Ed Monaghan graduated from Université de Laval in 1957 and did his general surgery training at Mcgill University before starting a distinguished career at The Royal Victoria Hospital as a General Surgeon. During his time at the Royal Vic, he was a member of the team responsible for kidney transplants and he also helped establish the first Emergency Medicine Specialist program in Canada.

A natural teacher, he took great pride in his career at Mcgill University, where he became Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education from 1983 to 1993. In his retirement he was honoured with the title of Professor Emeritus of General Surgery.

He served for many years as Medical Consultant to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and as the Associate Medical Director of Blue Cross. He has been given lifetime achievement awards from The Canadian Association of University Surgeons, The Canadian Association of General Surgeons, The Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians and L'association des Médecins d'urgences du Québec.

Ed also served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve in the 50's and 60's, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander (aka 'Guns').

Ed and Lise retired to Mont-tremblant in 2006, where he was an active and respected member of the community. He taught bridge and was always generous with his time and knowledge. Doc Monaghan, as he is known around Tremblant, became a medical advocate for many people, helping them navigate the medical system and regularly making house calls or simply offering advice or comfort to those in need.

Ed was the caretaker of the Chapelle Saint-bernard and his tireless efforts kept the iconic Mont-tremblant chapel preserved and well maintained. Along with Lise, he acted as a church warden, serving Sunday mass for many years. He was a long-time member of the Gray Rocks Golf Course, where he was known for his friendly repartee as much as his game.

He was excellent at planning activities for his family, and many afternoons were spent boating on Lac Tremblant, or on a sleigh ride. He organised legendary Easter egg and treasure hunts and could always be counted on to jump into the pool with the grandkids and great-grandkids.

There is no doubt that Ed would consider the greatest achievement of his life to be his family. He shared a true love story with his beloved Lise. He was proud of the successes of his children and their spouses; he was a cherished Granddad and a gentle and caring Great-grandad.

"Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand."

A funeral service will be held at the Chapelle Saint-bernard in Mont-tremblant in September 2020, as well as a celebration of his life at Mount Bruno GCC. An interment ceremony in Quebec City will follow shortly thereafter. Dates to be confirmed.
