FLOM, Allan

-

November 3, 1924 - April 24, 2020

It is with great love and fondness that we reflect on the life of Allan Flom, who passed away peacefully in the early hours of April 24, 2020. Born in Montreal, Al lived a big, full life and found so much joy in spending time with his family and friends, working up until his 90th year, skiing on fresh powder, and making others happy.

Al joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at 19 years old in 1943, serving as a Flying Officer while stationed in England during WWII. Several months after the war ended, Al returned home to Montreal to be with his parents and two older siblings, Phyllis and Morton. With an incredible drive and work ethic, he worked tirelessly to start and sell numerous businesses before becoming involved in commercial real estate. Long after his children finished school, he took night classes at Concordia University, graduating in 1988 at the age of 63.

Doing business was Al's pride and joy, often feeding ideas and advice to his children and grandchildren—no one was too young to learn how to negotiate and make a deal. Al's other loves included travelling, skiing, playing tennis, and sharing meals with family and friends. One of his greatest friendships was with his best friend of 80 years, the late George Deckelbaum.

His love of life, sense of adventure, incredible work ethic and joy in bringing people together were unparalleled and infectious. His family and friends are so thankful to have been able to learn from him. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his partner, Jett He, his children, Suzanne, Jonathan (Liza), and Amy, his grandchildren, Allison Grover, Chloe Grover, Aden Schecter, Marlowe Flom and Eaton Flom, his many nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, and former spouse Judith (née Paltiel). He will also be greatly missed by his older sister, Phyllis Levitt, who lovingly referred to Al as her "kid brother" until the end.

A heartfelt thank you to the many caregivers who kindly looked after Al in his times of need. A celebration of his life will be held at a later time.

It's hard to know what happens after death, but we imagine Al is probably on a ski hill with George, laughing and dreaming up a new deal.
