Montreal has recorded 22,317 COVID-19 cases to date and 2,323 deaths, the city’s public health department reported Tuesday afternoon.

To date, 126 public retirement homes and long-term care facilities have reported at least one confirmed case.

Montreal’s figures represent 50.5 per cent of all the cases reported in Quebec and 64 per cent of all deaths.

The boroughs with the most confirmed cases are:

Montreal North, with

2,052 cases and a rate of 2,436 cases per 100,000 people;

Mercier–hochelaga-maisonneuve,

■ with 1,844 cases and 1,356/100,000;

Ahuntsic–cartierville,

with 1,842 cases and 1,372/100,000;

■ with 1,247 cases and 893/100,000.

The sectors reporting the highest numbers of deaths are:

Mercier–hochelaga-maisonneuve,

■ 258;

Ahuntsic–cartierville,

247;

Côte-des-neiges–notredame-de-grâce,

■ 192;

Montreal North, 158;

Rivière-des-prairies–

Pointe-aux-trembles, 146;

Sud-ouest, 144;

Rosemont–la Petitepatrie,

■ 136;

Lasalle, 134.

Epidemiologists and health-care experts say it will take several months to determine exactly why some sectors are being harder hit than others. Theories broached to date include the number of long-term care centres or seniors’ centres that exist in a particular territory, as they have been the site of a large percentage of the cases in Quebec and more than 80 per cent of the deaths.

Other factors probably include the number of healthcare workers employed in seniors’ care centres or hospitals that live in a borough and dense living conditions.

A higher percentage of lower-income households with residents who work in essential services and have had to go to work while others stayed at home and who are more likely to have pre-existing health conditions, making them more vulnerable to the disease, may also play a role.
