-

Montreal reported 35 new COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, as well as 136 new cases.

In all, there are now 25,788 confirmed cases in the greater Montreal area. A total of 2,982 people have died.

The number of new cases and deaths reported Wednesday were slightly higher than the increases reported earlier this week.

More than a fifth of those infected in the city work in the health network. The hardest-hit age group continues to be people 80 and older, followed by those in their 40s.

There are still 140 seniors’ residences or long-term care centres (CHSLDS) with at least one confirmed case in the area.

With 2,399 confirmed cases, Montreal North remains the borough where the most people have tested positive. It is closely followed by Ahuntsic-cartierville and Mercier—hochelaga-maisonneuve.

Mercier—hochelaga-maisonneuve has recorded the most deaths, with 339. But Town of Mount Royal, where 67 people have died, has recorded the most deaths per 100,000 residents.

Most of those deaths have occurred in long-term care centres or seniors’ residences.

Côte-st-luc, which has now made masks mandatory in stores and city buildings, has 496 confirmed cases.

The greater Montreal region remains the epicentre of the pandemic in Quebec, with nearly 50 per cent of all confirmed cases in the province.

The province recorded 291 new cases on Wednesday, bringing the total to 51,884. There were 81 new deaths reported.

The death toll is now 4,794 across Quebec.
