For many, skiing isn't top of mind

Re: “Christmas Day shutdown looms for all of Quebec” (Montreal Gazette, Dec. 16)

Everyone at Premier François Legault's press briefing seemed solely focused on commerce, shopping and sports. As the director of a mental health organization, I can attest none of these issues will affect our community — or other impoverished and marginalized populations.

Skiing lessons are inaccessible to every one of these communities, yet the subject was given ample coverage.

I do not deny the importance of our fragile economy, especially at this time of year. But where was the journalistic rigour to ask questions about some of the issues that thousands of Quebecers face this holiday season?

For example: Can a citizen volunteer at a homeless shelter to ensure that vulnerable persons can have at least one festive meal? Are community workers going to be prioritized for vaccination so they can continue the frontline work they have been doing diligently since the beginning of the pandemic? Could Quebecers have been encouraged to remember the vulnerable members of our society by picking up a pair of warm socks or gloves to share with someone in need? And more.

COVID-19 has devastated so many communities. Marginalized citizens should have priority during press conferences devoted to the health and well-being of all citizens — not only those who are fortunate enough to shop, ski or participate in online activities.
