WHICH ANIMALS ARE IN SEASON WHEN?

Quebec is divided into 29 hunting zones. The island of Montreal is in a large territory known as Zone 8, specifical­ly Zone 8 North.

What's in season when for licensed hunters on the island of Montreal?

White-tailed deer (with antlers or antlerless) may be hunted in Zone 8 North between Oct. 2 and Oct. 15, 2021 using a bow or crossbow; between Oct. 16 and Oct. 20, 2021 using a 10-, 12-, 16- or 20-gauge shotgun with shells loaded with slugs or shot of a diameter equal to or greater than 7.6mm, muzzle-loader, crossbow or bow; and deer with antlers (7 cm or more) can also be hunted between Nov. 6 and Nov. 21, 2021 using a rifle of a calibre equal to or greater than 6mm (.243) used with centrefire cartridges, shotgun, muzzle-loader, crossbow or bow. Permitted hours for hunting are from one half-hour before sunrise to noon.

Wild turkey hunting season in all of zone 8 is April 30 to May 24, 2021 using firearms, crossbow and bow and from Oct. 23 to 29, 2021. Bag limit is two bearded wild turkeys. Limit is one wild turkey, bearded or not, during the fall season (use of a dog — pointer or flusher — is permitted). Hunting is permitted one halfhour before sunrise till noon.

Small game*: Eastern cottontail, Arctic hare and snowshoe hare:

Between Sept. 12, 2020 and March 31, 2021 and again Sept. 11, 2021 to March 31, 2022 using firearms, air guns, crossbow and bow.

Coyote and wolf: Between Nov. 8, 2020 and March 31, 2021 and again between Nov. 8, 2021 and March 31, 2022 using firearms, crossbow and bow. Woodchuck: year-round, using firearms, crossbow and bow.

Raccoon: Oct. 25, 2020 to March 1, 2021 and again Oct. 25, 2021 to March 1, 2022 using firearms, air guns, crossbow and bow. Hunting using .22-calibre rimfire rifle at night with hounds is permitted from Oct. 25, 2021 and Dec. 15, 2021.

Silver, cross or red fox: Nov. 8, 2020 to March 1, 2021 and again Nov. 8, 2021 to March 1, 2022 using firearms, crossbow and bow.

Ruffed grouse, spruce grouse and sharp-tailed grouse:

Sept. 12, 2020 to Jan. 15, 2021 and again Sept. 11, 2021 to Jan. 15, 2022 using firearms, air guns, crossbow and bow.

Rock ptarmigan and willow ptarmigan: Sept. 12, 2020 to April 30, 2021 and again Sept. 11, 2021 to April 30, 2022 using firearms, air guns, crossbow and bow. Red-winged blackbird, American crow, European starling, house sparrow, common grackle and brown-headed cowbird: July 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021 and again July 1, 2021 to April 30, 2022 using firearms, air guns, crossbow and bow.

Rock dove: Year-round using firearms, air guns, crossbow and bow.

Quail, northern bobwhite, pheasant, francolin, rock partridge, chukar partridge, red-legged partridge and guinea fowl: Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, 2021 using firearms, air guns, crossbow and bow.

Northern leopard frog, green frog and bullfrog: July 15 to Nov. 15, 2021 using club, gate, dart, landing net, pit, hook and hand.
