Google Maps can now guide EV drivers closer to charging stations in Canada

- ALEX REID

Electric vehicles are, if you hadn't noticed, becoming much more prevalent on our roads, but as more people buy them, more drivers are realizing there isn't much infrastructure yet to support them. Google knows this, and is now doing its part to make EV ownership a little more bearable.

The Google Maps app built into some EVS' infotainment systems can now recommend a route that keeps the driver close to charging stations, which should quell some fears about range anxiety on a road trip. The updated Maps app does this by using “newly developed routing algorithms that use a type of math called graph theory,” the company says.

To help choose a route, the algorithm will display where the charging stations are located, as well as how long it will take for your vehicle to be recharged enough to reach the next destination. The total trip time will also include the charging time. The new Maps tech will be available for the built-in app in participating EVS, including the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge.

Google Maps isn't just upgrading to help EV owners though, it's also changing to help people who don't have cars at all. The newest update to Google Maps will also let users pay for public transit fare, and purchase train tickets. If you do have a car, the app will allow you to pay for parking with the touch of a button.

Those updates are currently available only in the United States, but Canada is likely to see the technology at a later date. The update will be rolled out on Google devices before eventually making its way to Apple and Android.
