Peace officers ride to help children
Peace officers and friends from various points in Southcentral Saskatchewan will head out Tuesday, June 26 on the ninth annual peace officers’ charity motorcycle run. Depending on the weather, organizers hope for between 80 and 100 motorcyclists to participate in the run that will begin from the RCMP detachment in Moose Jaw where registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sheriff Warren Miller said the run first originated in Regina and now it alternates between centres. He said riders will include police officers, corrections workers, courtroom staff, probation officers and friends “and other like-minded individuals.” The run will leave Moose Jaw at 9:30 a.m. in what Miller calls an impressive sight to see that many motorcycles travelling together. While there is no official parade out of the city, riders will leave as a group and will travel together as they head to Assiniboia, Wood Mountain, Gravelbourg and then back to Moose Jaw. The bikers will participate in various activities at the various stops, much like a poker run for snowmobilers. Lunch will be eaten in Wood Mountain where a motorcycle rodeo is expected to be one of the activities. A wind-up barbecue will take place in Moose Jaw at the conclusion of the ride. The goal of the run is to raise $10,000 to send local children to Moxie Club, a stimulating and nurturing environment for children with autism spectrum disorders. The club provides opportunities that promote creativity and imagination within a recreational, social, behavioural and learning program. Miller said funds will be raised through the $30 registration fee, sale of T-shirts, raffles, a silent auction, pledges and corporate sponsors. Pledge forms can be obtained from Mike Papic at 631-0695. Other information is available from Miller at 694-3602 or Dave Perry at 630-8776.
