It’s as much about awareness as fundraising
The annual Walk for Lupus will be taking place on Saturday, June 23rd to raise funds for lupus awareness, support services and research. The walk will take place at the West Entrance of Crescent Park at 1:30pm. Registration begins at 1pm. “It’s as much a walk about awareness as it is for fundraising,” said Chris Weber. “There will be information on hand to educate people. The more awareness, the more education out there; the more people can get treated.” “It’s a hard disease to diagnose,” Weber confirmed. Weber’s wife Marianne has lupus and according to Chris, the disease is a challenge for both the sufferer and the spouse. “Marianne can get sick in no time flat,” he said. “It can change a lot from day to day and you never know what the next day will bring.” The Walk for Lupus is Lupus Canada’s most important annual fundraising and public awareness event to “provide support through understanding, education, public awareness and research.” A portion of the proceeds return to Lupus Sk to benefit those with lupus in Saskatchewan. In 1979 a group intended to support and educate was started for those who live and work with lupus sufferers; shortly thereafter, an organization was established. In early 2011, Marianne Weber and Chantelle Cushway from Moose Jaw held their walk on May 7th and raised $2,117.30 from fundraising for the walk and other efforts.
