7th Annual “I Bought a Lunch” Campaign kicks off

- Sasha-Gay Lobban

Hunger in Moose Jaw is continuing its good work in the community by providing over 300 nutritious meals to children each day. It is that time of the year again to contribute to its “I Bought a Lunch” campaign which helps to continue this great work. This is the 7th year for this annual campaign that aims to raise 50,000 in 50 days. Hunger in Moose Jaw says they provide over 65,000 lunches per school year and is seeking the help of the community to raise money in continuing their goal. “The current cost to make lunch is $1 per lunch and in that lunch each child receives a sandwich, a piece of fruit, a vegetable and a snack. This ensures that children are receiving nutritious food that will enhance their ability to learn,” noted new Executive Director of Hunger in Moose Jaw, Sharla Sept.

As a result, Hunger in Moose Jaw has teamed up with local businesses to sell lunches that will help them meet this target. “We’re trying to raise $50,000 in 50 days. We have businesses in the community selling these paper lunches and we’re also seeking donations from the wider community. We started October 20th and we will be running until December 8th. The business and local community have been excellent so far, as donations are coming in steadily.”

Persons can purchase lunches at Hunger in Moose Jaw, South Hill Fine Foods, Bank of Montreal & other business locations. Emerald Custom Creations has donated lunch bags for the first 90 people who come into Hunger in Moose Jaw to make donations of $50 or more. Sharla Sept has been the new Executive Director of Hunger in Moose Jaw since June of this year. She has been working in non-profit organizations for almost 10 years, working with many children and families in diverse situations, providing in-home family support, mentoring programs and other programs. She says working with not-for-profit organizations has always been a passion. “I just love working with people and I love what I do. This is a great fit here at Hunger in Moose Jaw. We have a great team who are working on our programing and support and continuing the great work here.”

She thanks the community for their ongoing support and is looking forward to meeting their $50,000 target this year. “I thank the generous people in the community and local businesses working with us. The support has been great!” She added that volunteers are also welcome. “We are also always looking for volunteer drivers to drop off lunches at schools. We provide lunches to 18 different schools daily and all those sandwiches are delivered by volunteers so we are always looking for volunteers for those interested.” The “I Bought a Lunch” campaign funds will go to supporting the Child Nutrition Program.
