Support Veterans During Poppy Campaign

-

You have probably noticed the boxes of poppies at businesses and organizations around town. Perhaps you have even seen Legion members selling poppies at various locations. But do you know just what the Poppy Campaign is all about and how it supports local veterans? The citizens of Moose Jaw and people all across Canada give donations to help currently serving and retired military members that are in financial need. Some Legion branches even have a residence that is looked after by the Poppy Fund. All of the monies raised go to veterans and their families, whether they are Canadian veterans of veterans from other countries who have retired in Canada. It goes to help them when they are in need. Veterans and their families receive financial assistance for a variety of purposes. Financial assistance can assist with medications, covering travel costs if there is a need to go out of province to visit healthcare specialists, or to provide funds for emergency situations. In fact, there are many ways that veterans can benefit from the Poppy Fund.

All of the funds that are raised locally stay in Moose Jaw. A committee meets regularly to determine needs and how to dole out the funds. With Remembrance Day in the near horizon, a lot of funds are being raised at this time of year but funds are continuously being brought in through a variety of means, including bequests. Because Moose Jaw is a military town, people seem to have a great appreciation for our veterans. They truly care because their parents or their grandparents likely served in the Second World War.

It is important that we support our veterans and remember the sacrifices they made. Be sure to buy a poppy or provide a donation. You will be helping out someone in need in our own community. For more information on the Poppy Campaign, contact the Legion at 306-692-5453.
