Karate Kids Win Medals at Two Provincial Tournaments
The Five Hills Chito Ryu Karate Club athletes attended the inaugural ManSask 2017 Open on the October 28th weekend in Winnipeg, successfully returning home with medals. Following the ManSask Tournament, the Club travelled to the Yobukan Annual Friendship Tournament in Gibbins, Alberta also faring successfully. The Yobukan Friendship Tournament allows athletes to compete strictly within their own style of karate, while the ManSask Tournament allows any style and club. Athletes range in age from four years old up to over forty. There are qualifying rounds the students must complete, as well as other specific types of training, but there are plenty of opportunities provided the karate student is prepared to invest the necessary determination and commitment. Colin Rosnes, Sensei of the Five Hills Karate Club explained that they have formed a new provincial association called Prairie Karate Association, newly recognized with the ministry of Sport. The Prairie Karate Association supports the club by giving them a connection to Karate Canada, the national association, which is recognized by Sport Canada, which in turn is recognized by the international Olympic committee. Rosnes emphasized that opportunities exist for the karate athletes to elevate to any level from local to international if they so choose. He said that some karate students want to study locally, some prefer provincial, and some will want to pursue it nationally, as well. It’s important to note that the opportunity does exist, thanks to Prairie Karate Association and the Ministry of Sport. Prairie Karate Association is a small group and in order to have a tournament, they teamed up with Manitoba to create ManSask. This year the tournament was held in Winnipeg, and next year will be in Saskatoon. Rosnes was extremely proud to share the news, as well as creating their own unique medals specifically for this event.
Competition categories are based on a variety of different ages, gender, and belt levels.
