The highly anticipated Canadian Pacific Railway Holiday Train rolled into town on Saturday to the amusement of a large crowd of Moose Javians who showed up despite the cold.

The Christmas lit train made its way to the Friendly City to screams and applause with a live performance from country stars and a big donation to the Moose Jaw Food Bank.

Canadian Pacific presented a cheque for $10,000 to the Moose Jaw Food Bank; collected over 540 bags of food in collaboration with Moose Jaw Co-op, raising over 4,000 lbs in food donations for the Food Bank.

Over the past eight years, Moose Jaw has done it a little different. CP Rail says it was proud to be once again teaming up with Golden West Radio and the Moose Jaw Co-op and hosting the “Good-Buy to Hunger” Food drive. The Moose Jaw Coop promoted the sale of food bags from December 11 to 15 to give to the Food Bank this holiday season. In addition, CP Rail raffled four tickets to ride the Holiday Train from Regina to Moose Jaw The draw took place Dec. 15 at the Co-op. In 2016, Moose Jaw had a successful Holiday Train. The total weight from the Live Radio / Food Drive and donations during the show was over 5,000 lbs. of food that was collected for the Moose Jaw Food Bank.

CP Rail says it thanks the community and local businesses for its ongoing support. “There are some local businesses that played a huge role in making this a success and we want to say a big thank you,” said CP’s, Gabrielle Belanger. Some of the local businesses that played a part this year are: The Crushed Can / Cask82, Heartland Financial, Seaborn Agencies, The Pink Chair, Main St. Dental, Suburban Hotel, Hi-Tech Recycling and Boh’s Cycle. “Also, a huge thank you to two members of our local Fire Department, Mike and Ty, who played a huge role in loading and unloading the equivalent of over 540 bags of food delivered to the Food Bank. We want to also thank Double Barrel Trailers for helping us get the food to the Moose Jaw & District Food Bank.”

The Moose Jaw & District Food Bank also extends its gratitude to CP Rail and the community for their continuous generosity over the years. “This is very exciting for us. It is something we look forward to every year. We’re in awe looking at all the boxes and bags of food collected from the community. We can’t thank Co-op enough for being on board and CP Rail to help fill our shelves at the Food Bank. We thank everyone who donated for their generosity,” said Manager Terri Smith.

“We are a big supporters of this program. We want to continue to help communities and this is one way of doing it especially during this time of year where the need is even greater. We hope we collected the right products that people need and will enjoy this holiday season. We’ve been involved for about eight years and we enjoy doing it each time and supporting the community,” said Rick Cartman, grocery manager at Co-op.

This year’s CP Holiday Train saw live performances from Dallas Smith, Terri Clark and Kelly Prescott.
