Micaiah’s Christmas

- J. H. Klotz

I am a little shepherd boy, Micaiah is my name;

I live quite close to Bethlehem on Judah’s dusty plain. Sometimes we slept out with our dad, me and my older brothers.

To watch the sheep and keep them safe from lions, hawks and others.

We excelled at telling stories, out there with naught to do; We told a lot of tales, but our favorite one is true... Sound asleep, a light one night awakened us from sleep; We all were mighty frightened, and the lambs began to bleat.

But this angel of the Lord said, “Fear not, I bring good news,

To you is born a Saviour this sign shall be to you... You’ll find a little baby boy wrapped up in swaddling clothes,

Sleeping soundly in a manger unaware the cold wind blows.

Awestruck, but silently we sat, grand music filled the air, As a multitude of angels sang...a choir extr’ordinaire. The heav’nly host sang wondrously, “Glory to God most High,

Peace on earth, good will to men.” Then left the nighttime sky.

We headed straight to Bethlehem, we hurried all the way, To see this Special Baby Boy asleep upon some hay. This was the Saviour prophesied by prophets long ago; I brought a gift, my favorite lamb, a young ewe I’d named Snow.

I never will forget that night: the angels and that star, The barn that housed the newborn king, the wise men from afar.

But the thing I most remember as a little shepherd boy... When Snow peered in His bed she seemed...to smile with pure joy.

“Michaiah’s Christmas” is a narrative poem, which I wrote, as I always try to do at Christmas time each year. This is a story I imagined and wrote in 2009.
