Oh To Be a Child Again…

- By Dr. Steven Heidinger, Moose Jaw Chiropractor

I remember so many times as a kid, just wanting to grow up. Waiting to become an adult seemed like it took forever. As kids, most of us likely saw adulthood as something that would finally give us the freedoms we thought our parents were keeping from us. Many of us probably imagined that once me moved out of our parent’s house that we could add all the things we thought we were missing, yet keep all of the benefits of being a kid. Unfortunately, the responsibilities of real life, the ones from which our parents kept us sheltered, quickly made us realize how good childhood really was. When I think about childhood now, I mostly think about the “fun things”. Play time, vacation time, sports activities. These were the things we did when we weren’t in school, our “day jobs”. How many of us can truthfully say that we still do “fun things” as adults? Unfortunately, most adults would admit that any free time outside of the day job is filled with not so fun times. Hence the desire to be a kid again.

Work-life balance seems to be one of the greatest challenges for today’s adults. Burn out from work is often to blame as to why more and more people are taking stress leave from their job. In reality, the job likely isn’t the issue. Most of life’s stresses are probably coming during the non-working hours, but you really can’t get a doctor’s note to get 3 months off from your home life. I like to table-talk with my own patients. During a treatment, especially with the new ones, I almost always will ask a patient what it is they like to do outside of work and home. Any hobbies? Any “fun time”? Some will reveal activities like fishing, golf or horseback riding. Others are craftier with quilting, painting or other creative hobbies. I like it when I hear that they’ve got at least one thing that takes them away from the stresses of everyday life. Something they can call their own. Many of the patients I see deal with aches and pains that are the direct result of the mental stresses they deal with in life. The trends that I see are the ones who have more “fun times” in their lives, tend to suffer less physically. Burn out amongst physicians has been studied. A survey of members of the British Medical Association showed that half of their members live with stress, with 10 percent of them having to take time off due to this stress. Those who seem to have a healthy work-life balance do so because of what they do in their non-working hours. Like many of us, with our own careers, they have very little control over their work lives. Whether we believe it to be true or not, we do have control of the time we have away from work.

If you are finding it difficult to balance work and life, try thinking about the things that gave you pleasure as a kid. You are never too old to rekindle a hobby or to develop a new one. Taking a few hours of vacation away from your family each week to play something, or build something or even just read something, can bring you closer to balance.
