The Order of Eastern Star Starts 2018 on a Pawstive Note!
The Order of the Eastern Star is thrilled to have raised an incredible $12,000 for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. Best of all, thanks to an anonymous donor, the funds raised will be matched! All of the funds will be directed towards the raising, training and matching of an Autism Assistance Dog Guide to a child on the autism spectrum in Saskatchewan.
“The Order of the Eastern Star has embraced service dogs as one of our major charities,” says Llynne Lambert, member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Chairman of the Service Dogs Committee for Saskatchewan. “We chose to support the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides as they closely match our philosophy of helping others that have a medical or physical disability. There is no better feeling than knowing we are making a difference in the lives of Canadians by supporting a foundation that provides Dog
Guides at no cost to those in need.”
Autism Assistance Dog Guides help families and children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Dog Guides can provide safety, companionship and unconditional love to children that are
3 to 12 years old. The specialized trained Dog Guides can also provide a calming relief for children in high anxiety situations and reduce the stress commonly experienced in public places.
Through the hard work of the members and chapters in Saskatchewan, which held BBQs, garage sales, dances, dinners, auctions and concerts, the Order of the Eastern Star organization was able to achieve their financial goal to sponsor a life-changing Dog Guide. “We are so thankful for the support from our communities and many companies,” says Llynne Lambert.
Your support is needed and appreciated on February 8th at a Valentine Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction for Dog Guides, from 6 - 9 pm, at Bugsy’s Irish Pub, located in the Town and Country Mall in Moose Jaw. exists in nature, like Coke or Starbursts, it says, “HELL yes! This must be very important for our survival!! We must try to do this as often as we can for as long as we can because we don’t know when we will encounter this again!” The same thing happens with other forms of false pleasure: your brain has an inordinate reaction that it’s not evolved to accommodate and it gets addicted to the huge dopamine reward.
Unfortunately, this buffers us from reality. The problem is that we believe we have improved something in our lives because we feel instantly better but it is an artificial, temporary escape. It’s not that we’re no longer experiencing something negative, it’s that we’ve been distracted from it, made less aware of it, because of a temporary dopamine hit.
How do we tell the difference between enjoying something and buffering? You’ll know you’re buffering, (as opposed to just relaxing and binge watching Outlander) because there will be a negative consequence after the buffering. Your circumstances won’t have changed and the thoughts and negative emotions caused by them will still be there and feel just as bad. In fact, your results have probably gotten worse because you’ve overeaten and gained more weight or spent more money that you can’t afford, or you’ve reinforced that negative thought pattern one more time, making it even more resistant to change. That’s the difference between just enjoying real pleasure versus buffering with fake pleasure.
So what do we do instead? Well that’s where the real work comes in. Once you stop buffering, the painful thoughts and emotions come up. If you’re willing to let them, there’s a lot of information there, about what you really want and what’s really going on with you. Whatever emotions you’re trying to escape by buffering, those emotions have important information for you. Without that information, you can’t live an authentic life.
