Original 16 Cash League playoffs continue

- Randy Palmer Moose Jaw Express

Sometimes playoff success just comes down to who happens to be the hottest team at the right time – regular season records be damned.

Patrick Ackerman and his Ackerman Ag. Services foursome have apparently taken that to heart in the Original 16 Cash League playoffs, as they recorded their second upset in as many weeks Jan. 31 at the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre. Ackerman – who finished the regular season with a 3-12 record and was seeded 14th as the playoffs began – battled through a back-and-forth contest with Kal Tire (Robert Desjarlais, 9-6), scoring two in the seventh to take a 7-5 lead, only to give up a deuce in eight to see the game tied. Ackerman came through in the extra end, though, using the hammer to score one and take an 8-7 win.

The remaining ‘A’ side contests held no surprises. Top-seeded BTN Accounting (Penny Barker, 14-1) scored three in the second end and added two more in the fourth to build a 5-1 lead against KMS/Park Cap- ital (Ben Gamble, 9-6) on their way to a 6-3 victory. Seaborn Agencies (Joel Jordison, 13-2) had a similar result, scoring two in the third and stealing one in the fourth as they won 6-3 over Terra Grain (Ralph Courtnage, 6-8).

John’s Music (Ryan Wenarchuk, 10-5) rolled to a comfortable win over EMJ Marketing (Joe Gunnis, 4-11) in the other ‘A’ side game, putting up a fiveender in the third as they won 9-0.

In ‘B’ side action, Moose Jaw Fountain Tire/Keon’s (Warren Marcotte, 11-4) rebounded from his first round loss last week to take a 7-5 win over Team Redgoat (Donna Ackerman, 5-10); R.A. Garland (Murray Stroeder, 8-7) defeated Shaunna Fritzler (2-12) 7-1 after scoring three in the first and fourth ends; Tip Top Roofing/Protec Electric (Stan Barnsley, 10-5) picked up two in the eighth to defeat Protec Video (Wade Gray, 4-11) 7-6 and Barb Wallace (2-13) scored three in the second before stealing two in each of the third and fourth ends on her way to a 9-3 win over Easy Care Living (Lorraine Arguin, 9-6).

The Original 16 playoffs continue each Wednesday at Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre.
