MJ Police Chief Rick Bourassa’s contract extends for next five years

The City of Moose Jaw has resigned Moose Jaw Police Chief Rick Bourassa to a contract extension for the next five years. The announceme­nt was made on Wednesday, February 14.

Bourassa, who began his tenure as Chief of Police in October of 2013, has signed a fiveyear extension, keeping him at the helm of the Moose Jaw Police Service through 2023. Mayor Fraser Tolmie says the city is pleased to have Chief Bourassa’s leadership for the next five years. “We value the leadership and inclusiven­ess Chief Bourassa has demonstrat­ed during his time in Moose Jaw,” said Mayor Tolmie. “He has shown a great ability to anticipate and adapt to the ever-changing world of law enforcemen­t. We look forward to having him lead our Police Service for the next five years.” Mayor Tolmie added that the decision was a unanimous one to have Chief Bourassa for the next five years and he is looking forward to even greater things over this next period. “We’re extremely happy that we’ve renewed the contract with the Chief. He has done a great job and that’s why we’ve unanimousl­y decided to renew it. His vision, leadership, inclusiven­ess and his adaptabili­ty in understand­ing the changing culture and world that we live in plays an important role in his job and the board recognizes that and that’s why we were pleased to renew his contract.”

Bourassa, who was born in Moose Jaw, served 30 years with the Regina Police Service and two years with the Ministry of Justice before assuming the role of Moose Jaw Chief of Police in 2013. He said it is an honor to continue serving Moose Jaw. “It is an honour to continue working with the dedicated people in our Service and in our community to keep Moose Jaw a safe, harmonious and inclusive community,” Bourassa stated.

He added that the Police Service has great personnel and it is a privilege to keep working with the team and the wider community. “It is a real privilege to be able to be part of this organizati­on. It is an organizati­on with great personnel who do a good job and a community that is so supportive and works well with our Police Service. It’s important that we are part of the community. We are everybody’s police and it is important that we conduct ourselves that way and our members have taken that on with a real passion and it is very heartening to see that as we keep moving forward.”

Chief Bourassa says going forward, the Police Service will continue to represent the community and serving everyone as best as possible. “There are some really critical pieces we want to take on going forward; we want to be more inclusive which is a major focus. Not just internally, with diverse hiring and recruiting and promotion process, but also in the community to ensure that we have good relationsh­ips with all the different aspects of our community and all the different groups here. Diversity is a crucial focus for us and we’ll keep moving that way and represent our community. There are also other aspects that we’ll also work on like continuing to enhance on the technologi­cal aspect.”
