An Evening in Concert with... Murray Mclauchlan

-

- Murray McLauchlan, one of Canada’s most highly regarded singer/songwriters, will be visiting Moose Jaw for an engaging evening in concert at the Mae Wilson Theatre on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:30pm.

Over a 45-year career, McLauchlan has released 19 albums and been awarded 11 Junos. His songs Farmer’s Song, Down by the Henry Moore, Whispering Rain and Sweeping the Spotlight Away are now considered Canadian standards. McLauchlan is also a painter, an author, an actor, a radio host. He’s been bestowed an Honorary Doctor of Laws and appointed to The Order of Canada. Until recently, his touring had been restricted to Lunch At Allen’s, whose members also include Ian Thomas, Marc Jordan and Cindy Church. But with the release earlier this year of his critically acclaimed Love Can’t Tell Time, he’s back on the road, treating concert goers to a seamless blend of old and new. McLauchlan says he wants concert-goers to leave his concerts with a new perspective. “As a songwriter I know that it’s not enough to sit in your kitchen and write. Your songs need to be heard. Music is a communicative art and if it isn’t brought in front of people there is no way to tell if that end has been met. I like to think of a concert tour as a kind of roving gallery to test your art and your ideas. I try to do my very best to make it worthwhile for folks to be there and to perhaps look at things in a new way when they leave.”

He says the concert will engage his audience as he reveals anecdotes or stories about how he came to write some of his most popular songs. “It is a cabaret kind of concert where as a singer/songwriter, I don’t just sit and play music and not talk to the audience. I speak about where the song came from or anecdotes surrounding the song and sometimes I talk about what’s going on in the world. I play concert guitar and piano and I have a wonderful musician who accompanies me in upright bass who also plays in an orchestral fashion so when we do songs from my repertoire that’s very popular, it gets very big and orchestral sounding. The first half of my show is songs from my collection that people who are fans would love to hear. The second half is devoted to songs from the two recent albums that I’ve done, specifically the most recent one,” he said. “My goal is that when people walk out of the concert, they’re a little bit different than when they walked in.”
