WHAT IS IT?

-

Rosa Cross of Tancook Island, N.S., writes, “This item was found in an old house that belonged to my brother-in-law’s family. He and my sister discovered it about four years ago, when they began renovating the 150-year-old house. It’s made of lead and weighs about 1½ pounds. We’ve been wondering for years what it was used for.” LEVEL HEADED Last issue’s mystery item sent in by Clarence Giesbrecht of St. Marys, Ont., appears to be a line level. Jennifer Thornhill, who posted on our Facebook page, writes, ”It’s a line level. Although I am sure it has multiple uses, archeologists use it when marking off a grid before starting a dig. It hangs from a string.” Thanks to Jennifer and all who took the time to write. Go to ourcanada.ca/what-is- it to identify this issue’s mystery item. Do you have a thingamajig of your own you can’t identify? Send along a photo of it, and it may appear on this page! See page at left for our address.
