More of Our Canada

In Our Words

- Gary George, gary_ george@ rd. com

As summer’s swelter gives way to autumn’s arrival, the month of September seems to me a perfect time to sit back and take stock of the many joys in life. The companionship, loyalty and affection of a family pet would be one source of joy on my list. I’m sure that Kelsy Gibos and her husband Travis would agree with that sentiment. Kelsy’s moving story about the adventurous but all-too-short life of their dog Trout appears on page 58.

And there’s something truly special about a mother and her adult son being able to enjoy an amazing outdoor adventure together—especially when the mom in question is 25 years older than any of the other participants. Kudos to Helen Harwood, who had a whale of a time on vacation with her son Paul. Helen’s Our Travels story is presented on page 20—and a photo from their big outing appears on this issue’s cover.

And what greater joy is there than establishing a new home in a new land, after living through the struggles of uprooting your family and realizing the dream of building a better life in Canada? Read two inspiring stories from families who did precisely that, beginning on page 28.

The unexpected and the unexplained can also be a source of joy, if not downright amazement. And this is what mentalist Bobby Motta strives to instill in audience members during his performances. Bobby shares his magic touch with us in Showcase, on page 42.

And just imagine the joy of winning our Share Your Canada photo contest—your last chance to enter is on September 5!
