LAYERS OF LOVE
This multi-talented gramma made these unique shower gifts for each of her grandchildren
Back in 2006, I saw a pattern in a magazine for a shower gift that was a wedding cake made entirely of towels. I knew I would eventually need it when my grandkids were old enough for marriage. Three years later, I was attempting it for my granddaughter Kayda’s April 2009 wedding. Thus began a new craft for me.
It was exciting to shop for the towels, all the same pattern but in three different sizes, including hand towels and washcloths. They had to be folded and pinned with straight, decorative corsage pins. I also used pearl beads in two sizes, two-inch wide satin ribbon and artificial flowers in different varieties and colours— the Dollar Store and Walmart are great places to find them!
The “cake” sat on a round, tinfoil- covered cardboard base topped with a white doily. Once the cake was on the base, I decorated it. Everything was attached to the towels with the corsage pins. Finally, I added a floral cake topper that had been made by one of my neighbours, who is a professional florist. Over time, I designed cakes for all three grandchildren, reflecting their individual personalities—people-person Kayda, bubbly Leanne and no-nonsense Ryan. The end results looked like actual wedding cakes! In fact, I heard people at the showers say, “Why did she bring a wedding cake?” I just smiled to myself when they were shocked to discover the “cakes” were not real. ■
