A Helping Hand
Thank you so much for publishing my story “A Book is Born” (March 2020). I was so happy to see the beautiful photo of my daughter and her dog team on the cover. As mentioned in the story, I am donating all my royalties to Qimmivut (Our Dogs) in Clyde River, an isolated hamlet on the east coast of Baffin Island that is only accessible by boat in summer, by dogsled in winter, and by plane.
Clyde River has a population of under 1,000. The median age of its inhabitants is 21. Of those, 50 per cent are under the age of 20. Adolescence is a challenging period, especially in places where there is a lack of recreational activities, few places to hang out together and a shortage of work opportunities. In 1997, a group of concerned community members created the Ilisaqsivik Society, a non-profit community-based Inuit organization and Canadian charity dedicated to promoting community wellness in ways that maintain respect for traditional Inuit teachings and learning.
