More of Our Canada

NOVEMBER TRADITION

- Gary George gary_george@rd.com

As most of you know, every November in More of

Our Canada, we honour Canadians who have served our country in uniform down through the generations —and those who still do. By now, our annual “More Profiles in Courage” tribute has taken on a life of its own, and, together with our regular Veterans Profile page in every issue, it continues to attract story and photo submissions from far and wide across the country. The 2020 edition awaits you on pages 7 though 13, and you’re also likely to enjoy the many other Remembrance-themed departments and features that follow.

If our cover photo caught your interest or caused a moment of reflection, make sure to take a gander at the full selection of “Morning Haze” photos beginning on page 44. Taken as a whole, this photo feature not only captures Mother Nature’s quieter side, it’s also a testament to how many talented photographers we have among us.

On the topic of talent, I had the opportunity leading up to this issue to work on a story from one of the most sincere, outgoing and multi-talented people I have ever met on this job: Percy Kinney. Percy is a musician, songwriter, broadcaster, record producer, novelist and retired Chief Coroner with a rather interesting story to tell. Check out “The Beat Goes On” in Showcase on page 38.

And we are also blessed to have so many volunteers in our midst—people who recognize a need, have a helpful idea and know how to bring it to fruition. People like Ava Walter and Karin Mackenzie, who working in tandem, came up with a beautiful and effective way to raise funds and awareness for their Legion branch in Nipigon, Ont. Fellow community member and local writer Glena Clearwater shares the story of this remarkable duo in Cause for Applause on page 18.

Have a wonderful fall, everyone—stay safe!
