I Spy With My Little Eye

A skilled hunter can make quick work of its prey

- By Paul Sinclair, Lindsay, Ont.

Foxes come in many different colours and all possess the ability to search out their meals in order to feed themselves or their families.

I was out for my usual drive in Kirkfield, Ont., when I came across a multi-coloured fox. I quickly pulled the van over and grabbed the camera that was sitting on the passenger seat. As the fox continued to walk by me, I noticed something in its mouth. It was so focused on its next quest that it kept coming closer and closer towards me. I could see clearly that it had a mouse in its mouth and once it had made its way past me, I started the van and backed up to where it relocated. Once there, I witnessed the natural prowess of this beautiful creature. It dropped the mouse for a second and, with lightning-quick speed, it jumped through the “page wire” fence and caught another mouse. Without losing a step, it picked up both mice, got back through the fence and continued on its journey. I managed to keep up with it for a few hundred yards until it ran into a bush and I lost sight of it.

I have photographed wild foxes in the past, and I’m pretty relaxed around wildlife in general, so this fox seemed unbothered by my presence.

It was an exciting trip and a memory for a lifetime.

GENTLE CHAZ

Janet Lance of Corbeil, Ont., writes, “This was my girl, Chaz. She was a Bernedoodle —a mixed breed of 25 per cent Bernese Mountain Dog and 75 per cent Miniature Poodle. She was the most gentle dog I have ever had. Chaz was also great with my grandkids who are six and and eight years of age—she never so much as nipped at them. My beloved Chaz passed away last summer, just before she would have turned nine. We still miss her every day.” Got a great shot of your family’s pet? Send it along and it may appear on this page!
