Crystal the Snowflake

Life for this little snowflake is full of change and unexpected adventure!

- By Marilyn Paul, Moosomin, Sask.

Once upon a time,

there was a snowflake named Crystal, who belonged to the Nimbus Cloud family. She was lacy and very delicate. She floated through the sky with all her brothers and sisters. She loved floating and was sure she would do it for the rest of her life. But one day, Mother Nimbus said, “It’s time for all of you to go to Earth and beautify the dull autumn land. Then with a gentle push, out they went, falling, falling to Earth.

At first, Crystal was afraid, but as she floated with all the other flakes she began to enjoy it. After a long time they landed on someone’s lawn. They all snuggled together and waited to see what was going to happen next. They were near the street so they saw many cars drive by. There were white, blue , red and grey cars. Sometimes, a noisy truck would go by and Crystal felt afraid.

People wearing heavy coats, toques and scarves walked their dogs. Some dogs snuffled in the snow and tickled Crystal. Her favourite thing to see was the children. They didn’t walk fast like the adults. They slid on the ice, climbed on the snowbanks and pushed each other as they dawdled along. Some of the flakes got squashed when the kids jumped on the snowbanks, but Crystal was lucky.

As the cold winds blew, Crystal realized she was changing from being a lacy flake to a hard chunk of snow. She nestled down with the others to wait and see what would happen next.

One day, the cold wind stopped blowing and the sun got very warm. Crystal could feel herself turning to water. Bit by bit she flowed into a stream and quickly floated away. She had no idea where she would end up, but she was excited for her next adventure. n
