Pay up to play the game
Re: Bautista Swings For The Fences, Feb. 23.
Almost daily we hear of obscene amounts of money being thrown at professional athletes. We can only shake our heads when we think of such baseball greats such as Stan Musial, who played in the 1960s and worked in a clothing store in the off season to make ends meet. However, big contracts for athletes are the new reality. If baseball teams wish to remain competitive they have to loosen the purse strings. Last year, like many other Canadians, I thoroughly enjoyed the Blue Jays run. My advice to Rogers would be to lock up Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson with five-year contracts. Hopefully lightning will strike twice and we will see another terrific Blue Jays run or, as Yogi Berra would say, “Déjà vu all over again.”
