February 25, 1880 A fire destroyed the New Brunswick legislature building, Province Hall, in Fredericton. Investigators determined it was caused by a “register grate too close to the carrying timbers.” Plans for a new building were already in development before the fire, this time for a building of stone rather than wood. The new legislature opened in February 1882, with a grand ball to mark the occasion.
