February 26, 1857 Adelaide Hoodless, founder of the Women’s Institutes, was born at St George, Canada West. Hoodless was inspired to act when her infant son died after drinking impure milk. She believed women’s destiny lay in the home, and devoted herself to the better education of women for motherhood and household management. She campaigned to include home economics in schools and did not support the suffragette movement.
