YELLOW, TURQUOISE ADD SEASONAL VIBE TO A NEUTRAL MODEL LISA VAN DE VEN

-

Josephine Hsiao may have designed it to appeal to as many people as possible — from young couples to retired down-sizers — but the model suite at Fontana Markham still has lots of style. Described by the interior decorator as “clean, crisp and simple,” the suite pairs a neutral backdrop of greys and whites with vivid green, yellow and turquoise accents. Glass and reflective surfaces keep the unit feeling open and airy. “If I had used a lot of solids in the furniture, it would have made the space look smaller,” says the design co-ordinator with the Fontana Decor Studio. Units at the H&W Development site range from 557 to 1,100 square feet and start at $250,000. The sales office is located at 10 Cedarland Dr., Markham, and is open Monday to Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m. Call 905-604-7886 or visit fontanamarkham.com. While the dining table may be glass and chrome — a continuation of materials used throughout the suite — Hsiao opted to introduce a splash of colour with the sleek yellow-green fabric-covered chairs around it. A turquoise ceramic bird adds another, smaller pop to the table setting. Muted grey metallic nightstands give the master bedroom “a clean, sleek look,” Hsiao says, and contrast against the grey-brown floors. Meanwhile, another vivid accent — this time the turquoise bedside lamps — add a drop of colour to the space. Everything else remains neutral, including the artwork above the bed. “It’s simple, it’s compact, and it’s tufted so it adds visual interest,” Hsiao says of this charcoal sofa, accentuated with patterned pillows to “complement the colour scheme.” Below it, a shag rug adds texture, while a glass coffee table keeps sightlines open in the space. “There’s a connection between things. It doesn’t pop out of nowhere,” Hsiao says of this grey tufted headboard, which repeats the aesthetic of the living room sofa. The bed itself is covered in gold-brown sheets and a contrasting white bedspread, featuring a simple pattern for added interest.
