In the 905, but on the subway

Plaza adds Vaughan to its ‘core’ roster

- Lisa Van de Ven Steps Away

‘Strictly a downtown builder,” is how Scott McLellan, senior vicepresident of Plaza, describes the firm he works for. “All our projects have been in the core of [ Toronto],” he says. Until now. Plaza’s newest site, The Met at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre — in the 905 at Highway 7 and Jane Street — isn’t really an anomaly. “All the same drivers we have in the downtown projects make a lot of sense here, too,” McLellan says. With the new downtown core, Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, underway, a concentration of development will transform the area, which has easy access to the 416 with the York-Spadina subway extension and the nearby highways 407 and 400. “It’s going to be the best downtown in the GTA, because they’re basically learning from everybody else,” McLellan adds.

50 Steps “Everything is driven by the fact that the subway station will be delivered at the end of 2017,” McLellan says. That Vaughan Metropolitan Centre subway station will be a quick walk from The Met — a convenience for commuters, whether they’re going to school or work. “We’re three subway stops away from York (University),” McLellan says. “We’re 37 minutes away from [ Toronto’s] downtown core.”

100 Steps “From 50 to 100 steps away, you’re basically centre ice,” McLellan says. “Centre ice” is the new downtown centre, with its retail, offices and park, all easily walkable from the Met. “I don’t think you’ll recognize that whole area in five to 10 years.”

600 Steps While the additions are driving growth at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, there are already existing amenities nearby. Ikea is a 10-minute walk from the site — perfect for residents looking to furnish their new suite — and movie night is a quick trip west to the Cineplex Cinemas Vaughan, at highways 400 and 7. For special occasions, the Riviera Parque banquet hall is a five-minute walk.

Units at The Met, by Plaza and partner Berkley Developments, range from 510 to 1,453 sq. ft. and from $ 265,000 to $ 899,990. The sales office is at 7800 Jane St., Unit 14, Concord, open Monday to Thursday, noon to 6 p.m., Friday by appointment, and weekends and holidays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 416-4812222 or visit pureplaza.com.
