No-go on abortion

-

Re: Right Turn On Social Issues, John Ivison, July 26.

It is a little early for John Ivison to bring up the antiabortion bogey man. As a member of the board in a large, well- organized Conservative riding west of Toronto I have not detected any serious desire to return to this issue. It is true that abortion needs to have some restrictions on the termination timeline, but unfortunately that is a dangerous third rail and many politicians are afraid to go near it.

The attempt by a few determined individuals during Stephen Harper’s tenure to re- open the abortion debate was solidly rejected. The sly, back- door strategy was to pass a law stating that a fetus be granted all the rights of a “live” person. The sinister ploy here is that any woman who had an abortion could then be charged with murder. I believe in this enlightened age that train left the station long ago and I don’t see any serious attempt to bring it back. Any candidate who did would not get the support of a majority.
