September 28, 2000 Former prime minister, writer, and lawyer Pierre Elliott Trudeau died in Montréal. Tens of thousands of people paid their respects while he lay in state at Parliament Hill. A state funeral was held at Notre- Dame Basilica, and was attended by 3,000 mourners including Jean Chrétien, Fidel Castro, Jimmy Carter and Prince Andrew. Trudeau held power for fifteen years, making him one of the nation’s longest- serving prime ministers.
