La La Land’s 14 noms leads Oscar parade
With La La Land having handily swept up several accolades already during awards season ( including breaking records at this year’s Golden Globes just a month ago), Damien Chazelle’s movie continued its run by picking up a staggering 14 nominations for this year’s Oscars — tying the record for most nods previously held by Titanic and All About Eve.
The movie was nominated in just about every major category, including nods for Chazelle, leads Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, Best Original Song, Score and more.
Following in the not so far off distance is this year’s two other f rontrunners: Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight and Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, with eight nominations each.
A few surprises included the addition of Meryl Streep for Best Actress ( and no acknowledgment for the stellar Amy Adams, despite Arrival’s major haul), Viggo Mortensen f or Captain Fantastic, Michael Shannon for Nocturnal Animals and underdog Lucas Hedges for Manchester by the Sea.
Announcing the Oscar nominations early Tuesday, the Academy changed things up this year by presenting via livestream ( rather than a press conference), with a group of actors and past nominees and winners — including Brie Larson, Emmanuel Lubezki, Jason Reitman and Ken Watanabe.
The 2017 Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and air live on Sunday, Feb. 26.
