The tragic misses: Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth

Spieth had his stunning collapse on the 12th hole on Sunday last year, but he won the year before. It has been six years since McIlroy fell apart on the back nine on Sunday, but like Spieth he obviously has the talent and the game to win here.

The BPNTHWAMs: Justin Thomas, Matt Kuchar, Patrick Reed

Three Americans who have big wins on Tour, but none of the major variety.

On the back nine: Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood

They have been on the list of major contenders long enough to witness the emergence of a new generation of contenders. But Augusta tends to produce some enticing sentimental storylines.

Green jackets: Danny Willett, Adam Scott

Scott won a few years back and Willett just last year, but they come in here somewhat under the radar.

Wild card: Hideki Matsuyama Matsuyama was the hottest player in the winter, winning four times between November and February.

The big one: Dustin Johnson He has t hree straight wins. He’s the favourite.

Augusta National Golf Club is one of the few places in the world that can fight the weather to a draw.

But even this club’s apparently limitless resources will not counter the weather expected to arrive Thursday: it has no answer for wind.

Thunderstorms are expected Wednesday, t hen temperatures should drop and Thursday will be cool and breezy, with winds expected to be around 40 km/ h with gusts up to 60 km/h.

Similar conditions are forecast for Friday, then it’s expected to be calm and pleasant on the weekend.

Those first t wo days, though, could make things interesting, especially on greens slick and treacherous even under sunny skies.
