TRUMP’ S COSTLY RESORT VISITS

-

Commissioners in one Florida county are so tired of spending money on President Donald Trump’s frequent visits to his Mar- a- Lago resort that some are suggesting a special tax be levied against the property if the federal government doesn’t reimburse its costs.

$ 60,000

The amount Palm Beach County spends a day when the president visits, mostly for law enforcement overtime.

$ 2 MILLION

Amount it has spent since January.

$ 250,000

The amount Sheriff Ric Bradshaw says the county was expected to spend during Trump’s recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the president’s sixth trip to his Winter White House in the 12 weeks since his inauguration.

$ 10 MILLION

The money Trump paid for the property from the estate of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1985.

$ 150 MILLION

Forbes’ estimate of the club’s worth now.

$ 200,000

The initiation fee at the club ( recently doubled) where the 500 members pay $ 14,000 annually.

$ 100,000

The money Marian Smith, who owns a flight school at the nearby Lantana Airport, says she has lost because of the airport closing. The Secret Service shutters the airport every time Trump visits Mar-aLago because agents believe the 350 flights it handles daily pose a security risk.

The number of business owners at Lantana Airport affected. A banner- towing company says it has lost more than $ 40,000 in contracts.

AGAINST VISITS

“Trump is costing this area so much money, a hell of a lot of money, and he doesn’t seem to give a damn,” said Bob Brink, a novelist and retired local journalist.

FOR VISITS

“The fact that he comes down here, the fact he is involved in the community to this extent even though he is the president, I think that’s great,” said Julian Detwiler, who operates produce stands at local farmers markets.
