Saks in the city
Celebrating Canada 150
Imagine that you left your Halloween costume planning until the last minute. In a panic, you rip the luxe Gucci sheets off your bed and hastily cut two holes for eyes and voila — you place the sheet over your head and you are a ghost.
Well, that is exactly what exOlympic snowboarder Trevor Andrew did before going out to a costume party in New York City — but little did he know that several thousand social media posts later he would be known as THE #Guccighost!
With f urther encouragement from friends and fans, he painted his take on the iconic Gucci logo anywhere and everywhere he could. Then came the call from Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele and the rest is history.
Fast forward to one of the best parties of the year so far, hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue to celebrate Canada 150.
I walked right into a brilliant
art installation / party space and thought, “This is what it must be like to be in Trevor Andrew’s brain!”
The artist took over an empty space in Simpsons Tower and offered his # Guccighost interpretation of Canada 150.
Plenty of drinks, nibbles and beats were served up as hundreds of too- cool- for- school scenesters packed the space to see Trevor’s creation.
It took the artist close to five days to complete both the windows and the event space, tweaking every detail until an hour before the event started!
He created 17 new pieces and re-imagined over 100 Saks bags. The artist enlisted the help of some of the city’s most secretive and progressive graffiti artists to transform Simpsons Tower.
“I wanted to create a space that had a parallel vibe to that of my studio in Brooklyn where I spent the past year creating, merging art and fashion,” said Andrew. “It’s such an honour to share my experience in its raw form with the public.”
Bold face names on site included Shantell Martin, Jozy Altidore, John Meneilly, Jagmeet Singh, Paolo Rolden, Tyrone Edwards, Chloe Wilde, Jake Mossop, Mikhael Kale and Callie Beckerman.
“Not only is Trevor an extremely talented, multi-faceted artist currently putting his fingerprint on the fashion industry with his collaboration with Gucci, he’s a proud Canadian who is a shining example of what can happen when you work hard and believe your dreams will come to reality,” said Shayne Stephens, marketing director, Saks Fifth Avenue.
“His is a story that we at Saks are proud to tell.”
A lot to think about.
