June 19, 1903 – Two years before Saskatchewan became a province, Regina was incorporated as a city. Like so many Canadian cities and towns, Regina has its origins in Aboriginal culture. At one point the fledgling town was known as Pile of Bones, after the massive mounds of buffalo bones gathered by Cree hunters. In Cree, the name was Oskana-Ka-asateki, or “the bones are piled high together,” which was later incorrectly pronounced as Wascana.
