THE WINTHORPE MODERN IS A NEW BUILD WITH A FEELING OF HISTORY LISA VAN DE VEN

-

The name might say “Modern” but the interior design is transitional in this two-bedroom-plus-den townhouse model at The Winthorpe Modern. “It is a new build, but I didn’t want it to feel like it was a completely new space. I wanted it to have a little bit of a feeling of history,” says designer Andrew Pike. Combining a mix of contemporary and traditional esthetics, Pike played on a neutral palette, layering in tones of white, wheat, pale grey, beige and ivory, with pops of black for contrast. Texture, meanwhile, adds warmth to the design. “I wanted it to be very approachable,” says the principal at Andrew Pike Interiors. Units at the Val Bezic site range from 1,070 to 1,550 square feet and start at $899,900. The sales office is located at 65 Winthorpe Rd., Toronto and open weekends from noon to 4 p.m. Call 416-900- 6076 or visit thewinthorpemodern.com.

“We went with an intentionally taller headboard, to give it some presence,” Pike says of the guest bedroom — and with double-height ceilings, creating presence was a priority. The wheat-toned headboard features traditional tufting and antique bronze nail head detailing, while a ceramic deer’s head above adds whimsy.

The same wheat and white tones connect both contemporary and traditional elements in the guest bedroom, from the golden wheat stitching on the white bedspread to the room’s abstract artwork and more traditional vegetable-dyed area rug. Patterns and textures, rather than dramatic colour contrast, add the visual interest.

“There’s nothing fussy about it,” Pike says of this clean-lined, stone-toned sectional sofa from Elte Market. The simple design is classic but versatile, sending attention instead to the rest of the room — especially the dramatic large-scale, black-and-white print above, a focal point piece from Structube.

“The whole space was designed with the idea of having really nice textural surfaces,” Pike says, and this coffee table was chosen with that in mind. Featuring a concrete top and distressed wood legs, the table “has a beautiful feel to it,” the designer adds.
