Connected to the outdoors

- CONNIE ADAIR

Taking full advantage of the beautiful view f rom every window and capitalizing on the high ceilings on both levels (13 feet on the main and 23 feet on the second floor) were the primary objectives of this renovation, says the homeowner.

The home sits on a more than one- acre lot high above Horseshoe Valley, says listing agent Anne Chilton of ReMax Chay Realty, who has listed the property with Lance Chilton. “Valleyview Ridge has an architectural style that evokes both Cape Cod and Whistler, with high dormers, oversized windows and a harmonious blend of siding and stone,” she says.

“An open floor plan provided the greatest opportunity to bring the outside in and allow us to entertain to the fullest,” the homeowner says. “The renovation also greatly increased the functionality and storage in the kitchen.”

The gourmet kitchen is outfitted with high- end appliances, custom wood cabinetry and a natural quartztopped island with room for five plus the chef.

A window offers a full view of the waterfall at the front of the house, the owner says, adding that the open plan makes it possible to see the ski hills at Horseshoe Valley and beyond that to Blue Mountain.

Chilton says “the great room is anchored by a new fireplace installation, which is flanked by french doors leading outside to a large semicircular patio where you can enjoy spectacular sunsets next to an outdoor Rumsford fireplace.”

In the living room, the television is hidden behind a painting by Belgian artist Carl Benders. “When guests sit in the living room, all they see is a dramatic picture of a polar bear,” the homeowner says.

A system controls not only the audiovisual needs, but lights, blinds and other home automation needs.

The main- f l oor master suite has two full-height transom windows overlooking the f ront gardens. Three bedrooms, two ensuite bathrooms, a study and a family room with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams offer second- floor accommodations for guests.

“We achieved exactly what we set out to do,” the homeowner says. “We have managed to bring the outside in and feel connected to the outdoors through our views.”
