Trudeau at UN

Re: Here’s what Trudeau didn’t talk about at UN, MarieDanielle Smith, and Trump spoke ugly truth about UN, Christie Blatchford, Sept. 22

It is worth considering why Justin Trudeau felt he needed to share with the world what Christie Blatchford has noted was his unrestrained mea culpa over Canada’s mistreatment of its Indigenous Peoples. Extending the religious analogy further, it is not unrealistic ( and only mildly blasphemous) to suggest that, among other reasons, he was seeking international absolution from the open confessional of the global secular church for that which he characterized as his country’s near-genocidal sins.

When better to seek communal redemption in the sacrament of historical penance than on the heels of U.S. President Donald Trump’s misperceived Molochian pronouncements; and where better to consecrate his domestic political agenda than on the altar of the world stage. By doing so, Mr. Trudeau has presented himself as a latter- day prophet elegizing the absence of peace, order and progressive government, and selflessly willing to provide a renewed moral tone.

Unlike Brian Mulroney who coveted the j ob but never managed to grasp its brass ring, the popular Mr. Trudeau might now be shortlisted should he ever decide to trade gutter domestic politics for the anointed diplomatic heights of — dare it be uttered — the UN Secretary Generalship. Public penance does have its perks. Graham R. Mann, Winnipeg
