Red tape required

Re: Protecting their own turf, Marni Soupcoff, Dec. 1

The Law Society of Upper Canada is responsible to ensure professional competence of lawyers — hence the “red tape” Ms. Soupcoff complains of. She suggests that “those who just want to make a living as a lawyer without the red tape” be free to “go it on their own.” That would certainly work well in other professions too — engineers building bridges, surgeons performing eye surgery — just let them do it on their own! At society’s peril.
