January 12, 1920 — Haida sculptor William “Bill” Reid was born in Victoria, B.C. Reid’s work is famous for its depiction of Northwest Coast landscape, imagery and stories. His sculpture “Spirit of the Haida Gwaii” was previously featured on the $20 bill. The first bronze casting of the sculpture sits at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, while the second greets visitors to the International Terminal at Vancouver International Airport.
