ON THIS DAY
January 15, 1886 — Businessman and politician C.D. Howe was born in Waltham, Mass. Howe’s engineering career took off in Canada, where he founded a Prairie-based construction company that became an international success. During the Depression, he turned his attention to politics. In Parliament he headed so many portfolios that he was known as the “Minister of Ministers.” Howe initiated many of the nation-building and economic projects that brought Canada fully into the 20th century.
