LF- 1 LIMITLESS CONCEPT PREVIEWS LEXUS’S FLAGSHIP SUV FUTURE

- David Booth Driving. ca

What is it? Lexus’s concept of a future when SUVs reign supreme in the luxury segment. Why does it matter? Although Lexus calls its design Molten Katana, created from “molten metal forged into a fine Japanese sword,” what it really is is a tad more prosaic, namely the last step in the crossover’s complete takeover of the North Ameri can automotive marketplace.

More specifically, Lexus envisions the LF- 1 — or something like it — as the flagship ( or, more likely in the short term, co- flagship)

of its entire lineup. It’s a position usually held by a sedan.

When is it coming? It’s a concept, so technically never. But you can already see obvious design hints of Lexus models to come.

Should you buy it? You’ll only be able to buy parts of it. More accurately, some of the technology it promises. For the LF-1’s powertrain, for instance, Lexus talks about gas, fuel cell, hybrids and battery power as all being possible solutions for the future. And the carmaker promises that by “around 2025,” every Lexus model around the world will be available either as a dedicated electrified model, or have an electrified option.

Other high- tech gadgetry includes a Chauffeur mode, which allows for handsfree operation thanks to the vehicle’s by- wire steering, braking, acceleration, lights and signals. There’s also something Lexus calls a four-dimensional navigation system which, the company says, builds on traditional systems by adding the element of time to the equation. It claims the system acts like a real- time concierge by anticipating the needs of the driver and passengers based on the progress, traffic and road conditions along the programmed trip and then suggesting fuel stops, rest breaks and restaurants.
