70 years of porsche exhibit showcases legendary machines

- James Careless

the show’s 70 years of porsche exhibition celebrates the timeline of this performance automotive legend.

The artistic and engineering genius that is Porsche will be headlining the 2018 Canadian International AutoShow ( the AutoShow). Renowned as Canada’s premier automotive event, the event will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre February 16- 25, 2018.

The AutoShow’s 70 Years of Porsche exhibition will trace the timeline of this performance carmaker by displaying some of the legendary machines that have made Porsche an automotive legend. On hand will be the Porsche 356, 912, 911 Turbo, Carrera GT, and 918 Spyder.

“Porsche is holding this exhibition as t he kickoff to our celebrations of Porsche’s 70 years as a manufacturer of sports cars,” said Margareta Mahlstedt; Director of Marketing with Porsche Cars Canada. “In addition to the highlighted vehicles mentioned above, we will also offer visitors the opportunity to experience the Porsche Mission E concept through augmented reality.”

Here is what makes each of the 70 Years of Porsche display cars so special:

PORSCHE 356: In 1948, 17 years after Ferdinand Porsche founded the company, the first production Porsche 356 rolled off the line. “The 356 pioneered t he same aerodynamic, rear- engine design enthusiasts across the globe have come to revere,” said Mahlstedt. “Today, the model

that put Porsche on the map is also one of the most sought- after collectables on the market.”

PORSCHE 912: Since its introduction in 1963, the Porsche 911 has become the Holy Grail of sports cars. But it was actually the 912, an entry- level alternative to the 911, which secured the Porsche brand’s early success. In production between 1965- 69 and again from 1975-76, the four- cylinder 912 significantly outsold the 911 during their first years on the market.

PORSCHE 911 ( 930)

Turbo: With a top speed of 246 km/ h, the first turbocharged 911 ( a. k. a the 930) was the fastest production car in Germany. “Susceptible to both turbo lag and oversteer, it became notorious for its white- knuckle driving dynamics,” Mahlstedt said. “And despite the fact most sports cars today are now turbocharged, anyone lucky enough to get behind the wheel of this beast will know there’s only one true Turbo.”

PORSCHE CARRERA GT:

The 2004 Carrera GT was ahead of its time, offering a 0- 100 km/ h time under four seconds and a monstrous 605- hp output. “It’s more than a sports car — It’s a force of nature,” said Mahlstedt. “Famous for its exhaust note, there’s a reason this roadster wails like a race car: Its 5.7- litre V10 was first developed for Le Mans.”

PORSCHE 918 SPYDER:

The 2013 918 Spyder broke new ground as a high- power hybrid. Its mid- engine 4.6- liter V8 works in harmony with two electric motors to produce a total of 887- hp, earning the 918 its reputation as the world’s first hybrid hypercar. “In September 2013, it became the first streetlegal series production car to shatter the seven- minute barrier on the Nürburgring ‘ Green Hell’ Nordschleife,” Mahlsedt said.
