Cha-ching: Crowe to have divorce auction

- Sadaf Ahsan

When regular people get divorced, they give their stuff away to friends, donate it, burn it or, you know, have garage sales.

But Russell Crowe is no regular person.

With his divorce to actress Danielle Spencer on the cusp of being finalized after their separation in 2013, the pair have decided to hold a fancy auction at Sotheby’s Australia, titled, simply, “The Art of Divorce.”

In the Daily Telegraph, Crowe explained, “We’ve been separated over five years now, our divorce should be finalized around the time of the auction. Just as we collaborate on the upbringing of our kids, it’s easy for us to work together on something like this. I think she feels the same way I do in regards to just moving on things that help create space for the future.”

So how much, exactly, are they ridding themselves of ?

“On the practical side, this collection probably equates to three rooms full of things I’ll no longer have to care for, document, clean, tune and insure,” said Crowe.

If that’s got your interest piqued, some of the items set to be auctioned off include a guitar collection, cars, paintings, jewelry, furniture, sports equipment, luxury watches, and a chariot (reminiscent of Gladiator). And, of course, there’s a ton of actual movie memorabilia, including a violin from Master and Commander, costumes from Les Miserables, a satin boxer’s robe from Cinderella Man, and boots from Romper Stomper among another 200 or so items.

According to Sotheby’s, the total value of the auction is an estimated US$ 2.8 million. The auction is set for April 7 in Sydney, Crowe’s wedding anniversary and 54th birthday. When could there be a better time to celebrate?
