What have we become?

Re: Too touchy for art school. Christie Blatchford, March 7

I used to have considerable pride in being Canadian because I thought this country and its citizens were openminded, fair and tolerant of diverse opinion. No longer is that true. I am ashamed.

After reading story after story about the political correctness of our misguided educational i nstitutions, this latest and most cowardly example by the Ontario College of Art and Design, was, in spite of what the college’s spokesperson said, a direct attack on those values.

The college’s l eap i nto acquiescence in order to assuage the feelings of a minority Muslim community, which claims it was “greatly offended, concerned and disappointed” at a piece of art makes this fourthgeneration born- and- raised Canadian sick. Is this what we’ve become? Spineless simpletons? Lemmings?

And it’s dung of the stinkiest sort for the college to excuse itself by saying that piece of art has “already provoked Muslims and has caused very upsetting reactions, and several students’ responses and behaviour towards this is extremely alarming and is starting to make some students feel unsafe at OCAD.” Unsafe? What depressing drivel.
