5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT WORLD NEWS DAY

-

1 NO TO BULLYING

Those speaking at the CJF event in Toronto include Carol Todd, mother of Amanda Todd, the Port Coquitlam, B.C., teenager who took her own life after being stalked and bullied online and at school. Since her daughter’s death, Todd has dedicated her life to advocacy.

2 RESCUE

Also speaking will be Ashlyn and Brayden Krell, whose dramatic story of rescue and recovery was documented in a five-part series by Jane Sims, a reporter with The London Free Press.

3 FINDING CLEO

Another speaker will be Christine Cameron, whose experience trying to find her long-missing sister was documented in CBC’s Finding Cleo podcast. Cameron and her siblings had been searching for their sister Cleo for decades after she was taken away in the Sixties Scoop.

4 MINING’S PERILS

A fourth speaker is Janice Martell, who campaigned on behalf of her father and other Ontario miners who were forced to inhale an aluminum powder — promoted as a preventive measure against lung disease — which instead is thought to have led to neurological and other serious health issues. Last year Ontario pledged $1 million to finance a program to assess the health of miners exposed to McIntyre Power.

5 IT’S ON THURSDAY

The event, hosted by Ian Hanomansing, cohost of CBC News’s The National, is open to the public and starts Thursday at 6 p.m. at the CBC - Barbara Frum Atrium, 250 Front St. W. Toronto.
