I scream, you scream, we’d all scream from the spicy heat of this ice cream

- Laura Brehaut,

An ice cream parlour in Glasgow, Scotland has created a concoction so spicy that it requires customers to sign a waiver before licking it. The notorious Carolina Reaper pepper – which reportedly caused one man’s debilitating “thunderclap headaches” – is the key ingredient in what may be the world’s most dangerous ice cream.

Aldwych Café and Ice Cream Parlour is behind the pungent, rosy- coloured icy treat. Customers must legally relieve the café of any responsibility should “personal injury, illness, and possible loss of life” occur as a result of eating the fiery treat.

Dubbed Respiro del Diavolo (‘ Breath of the Devil’), the café makes the ice cream according to a “very secret” traditional recipe dating back to 1936, The Takeout reports.

“It started in Italy. There was a place called Devil’s Bridge and with that, the Italian ice cream families used to meet up once a year and discuss how the year went for them. At that point, if there were any men that showed bravery then they would eat this ice cream,” Lee Bandoni, brother of proprietor Martin, told The New York Post. “So, because of the Devil’s Bridge, they called this the Breath of the Devil.”

The ice cream is so hot that staff members wear protective gloves while scooping. Bandoni described the experience of eating it as being akin to “a thermal nuclear explosion in your mouth.”
